How TikTok Became a Lifesaver

Social media gets a bad rap these days, with many people attributing world issues to it. It is said to bring out the worst in people and negatively affect teenagers’ mental health and body image. Moreover, some influencers and business owners spend significant time and resources building a perfect social media feed only to label the platform “toxic” and leave it or limit their following. While there are plenty of opinions out there about social media, I have found it to be a supportive and inspiring tool in my life, not just for sobriety, but also for mental health, friendships, and job opportunities. Of course, there are mean comments and even death threats, but the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Around 2019, I heard about TikTok, but I initially avoided it. I thought it was for dancing teens and that I did not need another social media account. However, the pandemic changed everything, and I downloaded the app in February 2020. At first, I had no idea what I was doing, but I soon discovered that TikTok is a unique social media platform. Unlike other platforms, you can consume content without having any “friends,” and you’ll never be caught off guard by something triggering or offensive. TikTok’s algorithm is also exceptional, delivering specific content for individual users, and there’s something for everyone.

TikTok has taught me more in the last two years than any other social media platform. I can consume news, celebrity gossip, sobriety inspiration, and cleaning hacks all in the same hour. If I scroll too long on TikTok, a video pops up, telling me it’s time for a break, unlike other social media platforms. TikTok also exposes me to new content creators and content I might not have discovered otherwise.

I have been through a lot in the last two years, and scrolling TikTok has been a lifesaver. When I can’t manage my emotions or life, or I’m overcome with dread, grief, or overwhelm, TikTok feels safe. It’s a place on the internet where I can show up and be myself, with no curated feed or perfect editing. I follow content creators who review books, talk about their lives, live with ADHD, live abroad, are liberals living in red states, and more.

TikTok has allowed me to find my people and let go of shame. It has reminded me to take breaks and care for myself. I thought TikTok wasn’t for me, but I was wrong. It has become a nurturing place where my heart can land. Social media is what you make of it, and if you’re looking for something inspiring and unique, the silly little clock app is it. Yes, it has dancing and trends, but you can participate in those only if you want to. Thank you, TikTok, for saving me on my difficult days, and for being a safe and welcoming space.
