Many stories tell us about people who faced the worst circumstances imaginable and persevered to find happiness and success. However, we don’t hear enough about the messy middle of their journey when they are completely devastated, wondering how to go on and live. We need to acknowledge that life can be shitty, and it’s okay to feel hopeless and like shit isn’t fair.

Toxic positivity is not helpful. Saying “everything happens for a reason” or “look on the bright side” can make people feel dismissed, alone in their feelings, and invalidated. It’s uncomfortable for society to deal with people who are in pain, and we often don’t know how to help them.

Many of us will go through some tough times in life, and it’s okay to acknowledge that these times are shitty. Anything less would be gaslighting ourselves. It’s okay to feel tired and exhausted, sick, depressed, grieving, and dealing with obstacles. We are allowed to feel crappy when things are crappy.

Personal experience tells us that life is not great all the time. Sometimes we try hard to be healthy, but we still get sick. We try to celebrate, but we are quarantined. We are grieving a loss, and we are dealing with family conflicts. It’s okay to feel hopeless and like shit isn’t fair.

We need to acknowledge that life is not always easy. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, and it’s okay to ask for help. We need to support each other and not dismiss someone’s pain.

On her 37th birthday, the author hopes for a better year ahead. We may not have constant inspiration or a happy ending to our story, but we can acknowledge that life can be messy, and it’s okay to feel the pain.

In conclusion, we need to accept that life can be shitty, and it’s okay to feel like shit isn’t fair. Toxic positivity is not helpful, and we need to support each other in times of pain. We can acknowledge the messy middle of our journey and hope for a better tomorrow.
